Rated Watts Are a Lab Number
A "200W" solar panel produces 200 watts under Standard Test Conditions: 1,000 W/m² of irradiance, 25°C cell temperature, perfect perpendicular angle. You will almost never see those conditions in a backyard or campsite. Cell heat alone shaves 10–15% off output on a warm afternoon. Add haze, imperfect tilt, dust, cable losses, and the charge controller's conversion overhead, and a realistic planning figure is 70–80% of rated wattage under good sun. WattRatings uses 0.75 as the standard derate in every solar calculation — the same factor documented in our methodology.
The second number most buyers skip is peak sun hours: the equivalent number of hours per day at full 1,000 W/m² intensity. Most of the continental US gets 4–5 peak sun hours per day in the warm months. In winter, plan on roughly half that. A panel sitting outside for 12 daylight hours does not deliver 12 hours of rated production — it delivers 4–5 hours' worth, compressed into a bell curve centered on solar noon.
Get these two numbers right and panel sizing becomes arithmetic. Get them wrong and you buy a panel that takes three days to do what the marketing photo implied happens before lunch.
The Sizing Formula
Here is the only formula you need:
Days to recharge = Wh to recover ÷ (panel rated W × 0.75 × peak sun hours)
Flip it around to size a panel for a one-day recharge:
Required panel W = Wh to recover ÷ (0.75 × peak sun hours)
At 4.5 peak sun hours (a fair US average in decent weather), every 100W of rated panel returns roughly 340 Wh per day. Here's what that means for full recharges across common capacity classes:

Numbers are rounded; they assume you drained the unit fully, which you usually don't. If you only pulled 400 Wh overnight, you only need to put 400 Wh back — size against your actual daily draw, not the battery's nameplate. Estimate that draw with the runtime calculator before you spend panel money.
Quick verdicts on the table above: the RIVER 3 is the right call for ultralight campers who need phones, lights, and a laptop topped off — a single 100W portable panel fully services it. The DELTA 2 suits weekend RV users and short outages where a 300–400W array keeps pace with a fridge cycle. The Explorer 2000 Plus and DELTA Pro 3 are for people running serious daily loads off-grid — and as the table shows, they demand serious array wattage to stay solvent.
Solar Input Ceilings: The Hard Limit
A panel array can't push power faster than the station's charge controller accepts. Every station has a maximum solar input, and it varies far more than capacity does:

Two readings of this table matter. First: buying more panel than the ceiling accepts doesn't make the number on the screen go higher — a DELTA 2 caps at 500W of input no matter what you wire to it (within voltage limits). Second: the ratio of ceiling to capacity tells you whether a station was designed for solar-primary use. The Explorer 2000 Plus's 1,400W ceiling against 2,042 Wh is genuinely solar-first — it's the pick for off-grid users who want same-morning recharges. The Yeti 500X's 180W ceiling on 505 Wh is serviceable but dated, and its NMC chemistry gives up cycle life to the LFP field; it's only worth considering for light-duty users who find it heavily discounted.
Oversize the Array Anyway
Here's the part that sounds contradictory: you should usually wire more rated panel wattage than the ceiling, by 20–50% where the manufacturer permits it.
The reason is the bell curve. A 500W array only produces 500W-class output at solar noon, in cool weather, perfectly aimed. The rest of the day it's producing 150–350W. A 700W array against a 500W ceiling "clips" for an hour or two around noon — wasting a little theoretical production — but holds the input meaningfully higher through morning, late afternoon, thin cloud, and the entire winter. Total daily watt-hours harvested goes up substantially, and daily Wh is the number that actually recharges the battery.
The non-negotiable caveat: clipping wattage is safe, exceeding voltage is not. Every station lists a maximum input voltage (Voc), and panel open-circuit voltage rises in cold weather. Sum your panels' cold-adjusted Voc in series and keep it under the station's limit with margin. Amperage and wattage get clipped gracefully by the controller; overvoltage can kill the input stage outright. Check the manual before you wire anything in series.
Three Builds That Make Sense

How many watts of solar do I need for a 1,000Wh power station?
About 300W of rated panel for a full one-day recharge: 1,024 Wh ÷ (0.75 derate × 4.5 peak sun hours) ≈ 303W. If you only use half the battery daily, 150W keeps pace. In winter, double those figures — peak sun hours drop to roughly half.
Can I use more panel wattage than my station's solar input limit?
Usually yes, and it's often smart — the controller clips excess wattage harmlessly while you harvest more in mornings, evenings, and bad weather. What you must never exceed is the maximum input voltage. Sum your series Voc with a cold-weather margin and stay under the station's listed limit.
Do third-party panels work with any power station?
Generally yes, if the connector matches (most stations use XT60 or Anderson, with MC4 adapters) and the panel's voltage falls inside the station's accepted input window. Match voltage range first, connector second, wattage last.
Why does my 200W panel only show 140W on the screen?
That's normal. Standard Test Conditions don't exist outdoors. Heat, angle, haze, and conversion losses put real output at 70–80% of rated under good sun — 140–160W from a 200W panel is healthy, not defective.
